Completed: Warrior Dash

Completed: Warrior Dash

I haven’t written a recap yet, but I will eventually…

Aside

Woodstock fail

Alarm clocks can be finicky little devices. Particularly when it’s secondary functionality on another device (see: iPhone). I had big intentions of hitting the road at 5am this morning to drive to Anniston, AL for the Woodstock 5k. Alas, that didn’t happen.

As depressing as it was to not run in this race, things could be much worse. Last night we had our first trip to the Children’s Hospital ER with Jane Darby. You can read all about it over on Jane Darby’s blog. It was not a “hair on fire” emergency, but still enough to freak us out a little bit. By all indications everything is good now though.

I hate that I wasn’t able to participate in the Woodstock 5k. I truly was looking forward to this race, and my training was actually not that bad leading up to it. It definitely stinks to miss out but there are always other races to sign up for. Now I just need to find the next one…

Halfway point of 4 week training goal

Halfway point of 4 week training goal

I’m currently one run behind my target pace for achieving my goal of running 16 times in 4 weeks. I should be able to find time to make up for that run, but I don’t need to let myself get any farther behind.

I don’t have much time before my next 5k, so this goal seemed most appropriate. I missed a couple of scheduled runs during the first week, but have been able to get back on track by running on the weekend.

Today I signed up for this race in Anniston on August 4th. It looks like a fun race and everything, but pretty much the only reason I signed up is because they have a “Clydesdale” category. This is like a separate age category, but for men over 200lbs instead of men 25-29 years old. I really wish more races would have the same setup!

Krispy Kreme Doughnut Dash in Birmingham

This is the best news I’ve seen today. These runs sound like so much fun, but I have never had an opportunity to try it out myself.

In which we lost 21-1. Ouch!

I was the one scoring run for our team though, for whatever that’s worth!

Registered for Warrior Dash Alabama

Today I signed up to run in the Warrior Dash in October. I’ve got a couple of friends that are doing it, and it sounds like a ton of fun. Climbing over obstacles and crawling through mud… what’s not to love? It helps that it’s also the same weekend as Alabama football’s bye week.

Training began this morning, and I have full intentions to see it through this time. There’s no need to bring up my track record with training programs…

Race details at a glance:

Price: $65 until 9/5, $70 until 9/26, $75 until 10/2

Date: October 6th, 2012

Starting time: Varies, 13 waves leaving every 30 min beginning at 9:00AM

Distance: 3.2 miles with 14 obstacles

Location: 30 minutes north of Birmingham

Signed up for this race in an attempt to force myself to train for something. However, this attempt failed as I didn’t make time for a single run leading up to the race. Life is just very busy right now, and running is not high on my priority list. I’m trying to come up with other ways to change my approach.

That said, this could have been much worse. I did manage to “run” the whole time, albeit at a very slow pace. I really enjoy this race, as the course is very flat and the environment is always fun. The UAB football team started the race by running the first quarter-mile or so. The weather was wonderful, and there was tons of food afterwards. I also enjoyed the great views of Birmingham that the course had to offer.

I’m trying to find another 5k to sign-up for sometime this summer, so I’ll at least have something still on my calendar should I ever find the time to actually train again.
